The duplex
One of us describes it as a duplex inside his head: on one side the husband, father, church treasurer, worship band musician; on the other, hopelessly addicted, with a wall down the middle he was very good at keeping from leaking. Another was a seminary student and church assistant, "preaching and teaching the Answer, yet secretly living in total bondage." If that's your house, you're in the right place, and you're not the first to live there.
Why prayer alone hasn't ended it
Not because God isn't listening. The man who founded the fellowship prayed for decades and wrote later that his prayer had really been, "Please God, take it away, so I won't have to give it up." He had belief without surrender. He was waiting to be zapped, fixed, made unable to fall, and he calls that expectation "one of the subtlest strategies in my arsenal of denial." What he found instead: "What I needed was not more knowledge about my psychology or God, but power to stop what I was powerless over, and obey the little light I already had."
What it turned out to be
A spiritual problem with a spiritual solution, worked out in the company of other people. The Twelve Steps are prayer and confession and amends and daily surrender, done with a sponsor instead of alone. The fellowship is not allied with any church or denomination, and men and women of every faith and none sit in the same room. But nobody who walks into it with a Bible in the truck will find the language foreign. Surrender, powerlessness, a Higher Power, making amends, carrying the message: you know these words.
The people who'd understand
Most of us hid it from our church longest, because that's where the fall felt farthest. It turns out the room is full of us. Come once. Nobody will ask your last name, or your congregation.
