Get through the next hour.
You don't have to fix your life tonight. You only have to not make it worse, and to let one person know you're struggling.
If you are in danger
If you are thinking about ending your life, put this page down and call 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or 911. That comes before anything on this site. And know this: most of the people in our room had that thought before they found the door. It was the last stop before the room, not the end of the road.
If you have hurt someone or are about to, call 911 now.
One call
These are members of our meeting. They have heard everything. You can say "I found the website and I don't know what to say," and that is enough. If you're a woman, call. Depending on your circumstances you'll be invited or connected with women in SA.
If no one picks up, leave a first name and a number. Someone will call back. If you'd rather not call anyone yet, the SA International Central Office line is 866-424-8777 during business hours.
The next few minutes
- Put the screen you were on away. Close the tab, close the app, put the phone in another room if you can.
- Drink a glass of water. Stand up. Breathe out slowly, longer than you breathe in, five times.
- Say out loud, to no one: "I can't do this by myself anymore." People here will tell you that sentence was the beginning of everything.
- If you pray, pray. "God, help me" is the whole prayer. If you don't, that's fine too. Say the sentence above again.
- Write down the day and time of the meeting from the Find us page, and decide only that you will show up once.
What not to do tonight
Don't confess everything to your wife or family tonight.
This surprises people. The fellowship's own literature is blunt about it: a rushed confession, made in the middle of the night to relieve your own guilt, can do lasting damage to the people you love. Get sober first, get a sponsor, and then work out with him how and when to make things right. If anyone is in danger because of something you've done, that's different, and you act now.
Don't decide you're beyond help.
Every one of us believed that. The only requirement to sit in our room is a desire to stop. You don't have to have stopped. You only have to want to.
Don't bargain.
"Just a little" is the sentence that brought all of us here. You don't need to understand why yet. You just need to not open the door tonight.
Remember, you are not alone! There are many others who share your problem but are in recovery and are waiting now to help you walk down this path. You need never be alone again. From "Why Stop Lusting?", Sexaholics Anonymous literature
